BALI’S DAY OF SILENCE – NYEPI 2018 (17th March 2018).

Nyepi or Silent Day is a very unique holiday that you will only find on Bali. This is the day where everything in Bali is closed (restaurants, shops, even the airport). And people are not allowed to go out on the street.

Nyepi marks the start of the New Year and the arrival of spring. The Balinese Hindus do not celebrate the coming of the new year of the Saka calendar with lavish party. They celebrate it with meditation instead.

Nyepi is a day intended for self-reflection and any activities that might disturb this are not allowed. These mandatory religious prohibitions include no pleasure (amati lelangon), no traffic (amati lelungan), no fire (amati geni) and no work (amati karya).

Since Balinese people follow a different calendar system, it does not always happen on the same date as we know it. However, usually it takes place in March and this year (2018) it is happening on the 17th.
